Chlorhexidine/Hydrocortisone/TrizEDTA: Topical

What is chlorhexidine/hydrocortisone/trizEDTA topical?

Chlorhexidine/hydrocortisone/trizEDTA topical (TrizCHLOR® 4HC) is a shampoo and spray conditioner used topically in cats, dogs, and horses to support conditions such as superficial, itchy, bacterial and fungal skin infections (pyoderma); acute moist dermatitis (hotspots); and pododermatitis (skin infections of the foot).

The addition of hydrocortisone helps relieve inflammation and itchiness of the skin. Chlorhexidine/hydrocortisone/trizEDTA topical is not effective against parasitic infections (e.g., fleas, ticks) or against widespread or generalized infections.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not review non-drug health products (e.g., herbals, nutraceuticals, shampoos, and other supplements) for safety or effectiveness before they are sold to the public. Manufacturers of non-drug health products must ensure their products are safe and labeled accurately. The FDA requires that these non-pharmaceuticals contain a disclaimer that says, “This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”

Health Canada licenses “veterinary health products” after reviewing safety, efficacy, and manufacturing information provided by the manufacturer. These products are not tested by Health Canada.

"All medicines and medicinal plants are potentially toxic if used inappropriately or given at high doses."

Your veterinarian is the best source of information about the safety of non-drug health products in pets. Just because a product is natural does not mean it is safe. All medicines and medicinal plants are potentially toxic if used inappropriately or given at high doses. Supplements can also have side effects, like pharmaceuticals. Few supplements and herbs have been subjected to rigorous scientific trials to determine their efficacy.

Although the information in this handout may be helpful, it also may be incomplete and may not represent the full range of effects the supplement could have on your pet.

How do I administer chlorhexidine/hydrocortisone/trizEDTA topical?

  • This medication should only be used topically (on the skin).
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • If treating a contagious skin condition, consider using gloves to apply this product and consult with your veterinarian about further measures to avoid spreading the infection.
  • Use the combination of the shampoo and conditioner together, one to three times weekly or as directed by your veterinarian.

For TrizCHLOR® 4HC shampoo:

  • Shake the TrizCHLOR 4HC shampoo bottle well.
  • Rub the medicated shampoo into skin and/or coat until lightly lathered.
  • Wait 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse well.
  • Follow with TrizCHLOR spray conditioner.

For TrizCHLOR® 4HC spray conditioner:

  • Shake the spray conditioner well.
  • For dry application of spray, apply directly to skin and haircoat and allow it to dry.

This grooming product may require several applications to have full effects. Visible improvements may be gradual and noticed after several days.

Allergy test results may be altered by this therapy. Ask your veterinarian about how long this therapy should be discontinued before the test is performed.

What if I miss giving my pet the medication?

If you miss a treatment of chlorhexidine/hydrocortisone/trizEDTA topical, use it as soon as you remember and then continue with the regular dosing schedule. However, if it is almost time for the next treatment, skip the missed treatment and resume the regular treatment schedule. Do not give the pet two treatments at once.
